Discover KS1 maths

We have lots of fun exploring maths, using practical resources and  thinking about maths in real life contexts. For example, on pancake day the children were encouraged to think about how we could turn pancake making into a maths lesson. Some suggested number sentences and others realised we would need to share them - quickly they noticed the fraction pictures on the working wall and began to make connections.  Many discussed how their recent unit on measurement would be useful , and remembered that we  had measured in grams. After we made the batter, the children estimated how many pancakes they thought the mix would make. They then worked out how many pancakes  would  be needed  if we were to have half each and then a quarter each. After two had been made some figured out the missing number sentence  2 +....... = 16.  All  inspired by the children's inquires. Of course we had a great time munching them too.
Often children find their own resources to help figure out word problems and enjoy recording answers in many different ways. We all love exploring the maths around us.
